Basic Electrical Safety for DIY: Know What Not to Do

- Treat fixed electrical installation work as specialist work unless you are genuinely competent and understand the legal, testing and certification requirements that apply where you live.
- Before drilling, nailing or screwing into walls, consider expected cable routes around sockets, switches and electrical accessories and use a suitable detector as an additional check.
- For non-electrical DIY close to wiring, isolate power where appropriate and verify that the relevant equipment/circuit is not energised using a safe method rather than assuming a labelled switch is sufficient.
- Use RCD protection for portable power tools, particularly outdoors or where the existing circuit protection is uncertain.
- Inspect tool plugs, cables and extension leads before use and stop using equipment with damaged insulation, loose plugs, burn marks or exposed conductors.
- Do not overload multiway adapters or extension leads and fully unwind cable reels when required to prevent overheating under load.
