What Size Boiler Might Your Home Need?

  1. Separate the home’s space-heating requirement from its domestic hot-water requirement; they are related but not the same calculation.
  2. Space-heating demand depends on heat loss through the building fabric, ventilation, room sizes, insulation and design temperatures rather than radiator count alone.
  3. For a combi boiler, simultaneous hot-water demand and desired flow rate can drive the required output higher than the space-heating load.
  4. Homes with multiple bathrooms or high simultaneous hot-water demand may be better suited to a system boiler and hot-water cylinder rather than simply a larger combi.
  5. Radiator count is a useful sense-check but radiator outputs, room heat losses and required flow temperatures are more informative than the number of radiators by itself.
  6. A qualified heating professional should calculate the design heat loss before final equipment selection.

Practical tips

  • Oversizing can reduce efficiency and cycling performance; bigger is not automatically better.
  • If insulation or windows are being upgraded, reassess heating demand after those improvements.
  • Keep the existing hot-water experience in mind: pressure, flow and simultaneous use matter to user comfort.
