Drill Bits Explained: Wood, Metal, Masonry & Tile
Recognise common drill-bit types and choose a bit designed for the material rather than relying on one bit for every surface.

- Identify the material before drilling. Wood, metal, masonry/concrete and tile are commonly drilled with different bit geometries and cutting tips.
- Wood twist/brad-point bits typically have a centring point that helps locate the hole accurately in timber and sheet wood products.
- Metal drill bits are commonly high-speed steel (HSS) types; speed, pressure and cooling become increasingly important on harder/thicker metal.
- Masonry/concrete bits use hard carbide cutting tips designed for mineral materials. Hammer/percussion action is appropriate only where the bit, tool and substrate permit it.
- Tile needs a bit intended for the tile material and a controlled start. Avoid hammer action through tile unless the tool/bit and substrate instructions specifically call for it after the tile face is cleared.
- Choose the correct diameter and working length. For proprietary wall plugs/anchors, use the drill diameter and hole depth stated by the fixing manufacturer.
- Stop if the material encountered is not what you expected—for example metal behind plaster, a service, very hard concrete or a void where solid masonry was expected.
Practical tips
- A multi-material bit is convenient, but a material-specific bit is often better when accuracy, life or finish matters.
- Do not keep pushing a blunt bit harder; heat and wandering usually get worse.
- Scan walls for likely cables/pipes before drilling, but remember a detector is an additional precaution rather than proof a wall is clear.
