Heating Controls Explained: Programmers, TRVs, Load & Weather Compensation

Understand the controls around a modern boiler or heating system and why better modulation can matter as much as app control.

  1. A programmer or time control decides when heating is available; a room thermostat decides when the property has reached the target temperature.
  2. Thermostatic radiator valves help limit individual room temperatures, but they do not by themselves tell the boiler the whole house no longer needs heat unless the control system is designed to do so.
  3. A boiler interlock ensures the boiler does not continue firing when there is no demand from the controlled heating or hot-water zones.
  4. Load compensation adjusts the heating-water temperature in response to how far the indoor temperature is from the target, helping a compatible boiler modulate instead of repeatedly cycling at maximum temperature.
  5. Weather compensation adjusts heating-water temperature in response to outdoor conditions so milder weather can be met with a lower flow temperature.
  6. Smart thermostats may combine schedules, app control, occupancy features or learning behaviour, but compatibility with the boiler and control protocol matters more than the brand name alone.
  7. If the system has a hot-water cylinder, the cylinder thermostat and time control form a separate part of the control strategy and should be set with safe hot-water storage temperatures in mind.
  8. After any control upgrade, balance comfort and efficiency by observing how the home heats over several days rather than changing multiple settings at once.

Practical tips

  • A sophisticated thermostat operating an old boiler as simple on/off control may not deliver the same benefits as a compatible modulating control.
  • Weather compensation and smart scheduling solve different problems and can coexist on some systems.
  • Heating-control wiring and boiler communication should be installed/configured by competent people familiar with the appliance.
