How to Lay Turf: Ground Preparation, Laying & Aftercare

Prepare soil properly before laying turf and understand why watering and early aftercare matter as much as the number of rolls ordered.

Key points & steps

  1. Clear weeds, rubble and old vegetation and improve obvious drainage or compaction problems before bringing fresh turf onto site.
  2. Cultivate and level the topsoil to a suitable depth, remove large stones and produce a firm but not compacted surface.
  3. Rake to a fine, even tilth and check finished levels against paths, edging and drainage before laying the first roll.
  4. Lay turf as soon as practical after delivery so rolls do not heat up or dry out while stacked.
  5. Start from a straight edge and butt joints tightly without stretching the turf. Stagger end joints like brickwork rather than creating long continuous cross-joints.
  6. Use boards to spread your weight when working across newly laid turf and avoid repeatedly walking directly on the fresh surface.
  7. Water thoroughly after laying so moisture reaches the soil beneath, then keep the turf and underlying soil consistently moist while roots establish.
  8. Delay heavy use and the first cut until the turf has rooted sufficiently; when mowing, remove only a modest amount of leaf height initially.

Practical tips

  • Order turf for the prepared area, not before major excavation or levelling is finished.
  • Fresh turf can deteriorate quickly in warm weather while rolled up, so coordinate delivery with the laying day.
  • If edges dry out faster, give them extra attention during establishment.
