How to Plan a Curtain Pole or Track: Position, Brackets & Support

Plan pole length, bracket positions and safe wall fixings before hanging curtains, with extra attention to long spans and heavy fabrics.

Choose the finished pole or track position before buying curtains. Make sure there is enough space above and beside the window for brackets, finials and curtain stack-back.
Measure the window/recess and add the side projection needed for coverage. Manufacturer and retailer guidance commonly allows additional width on both sides, but the final amount depends on the curtain style and available wall space.
Check the pole or track manufacturer’s maximum unsupported span. Long poles and heavy curtains may need one or more centre/support brackets rather than relying on a generic bracket count.
Identify the wall construction at every bracket location. Masonry, timber studs, plasterboard and lintels require different drilling/fixing strategies.
Check for concealed cables and pipes before drilling, especially around windows where wiring, heating pipes or other services may run nearby.
Mark bracket positions with a level and confirm the curtain heading will clear the window frame, handles and any radiator or deep sill.
Use fixings suitable for the substrate and load. If the fixing point is weak, move to a sound position or use an appropriate tested fixing rather than relying on a small general-purpose plug.
After installation, load the pole gradually and check that brackets remain tight and level before hanging the full curtain weight.

Heavy lined curtains create much more load than lightweight voiles, particularly on long poles.
Never assume the supplied wall plugs suit your wall construction.
For uncertain lintels, weak plasterboard or very heavy curtains, professional fitting can be cheaper than repairing a failed fixing.
