How to Tighten a Loose Door Handle

Identify loose fixings, grub screws and worn handle parts before a small wobble becomes a failed handle.

Work the handle gently and identify whether the looseness is in the lever itself, the rose/backplate, the spindle or the latch mechanism.
Look for visible fixing screws or a small grub screw underneath the lever/rose; some decorative covers need to be released before fixings are visible.
Tighten accessible fixings evenly rather than overtightening one side and distorting the handle plate.
Check that the spindle still engages the latch correctly and that the handle springs back without binding.
If screws spin without tightening, or the handle remains loose because internal components are worn, replace or repair the relevant part rather than forcing the screw.

Photograph the handle before dismantling concealed covers so reassembly is easier.
External security handles can be part of the door security system; use compatible fixings and replacement hardware.
