How to Pest-Proof Your Home
Reduce common pest problems by removing food sources, sealing entry points, improving housekeeping and spotting early signs before an infestation develops.
Key points & steps
- Start with identification: droppings, gnaw marks, trails, webbing, flies around drains or repeated activity in one area can point to different pests and different causes.
- Remove easy food and water sources by storing dry food in sealed containers, cleaning crumbs and grease, fixing drips and not leaving pet food out unnecessarily.
- Check common entry points around doors, pipes, vents, air bricks, service penetrations, damaged seals and gaps at skirting or flooring edges.
- Use suitable mesh, brush seals, sealant or repair materials where appropriate, while preserving required ventilation and drainage openings.
- Reduce clutter in cupboards, garages and utility spaces so signs of activity are easier to see and harbourage is reduced.
- Use non-chemical monitoring or trapping methods where suitable before reaching for insecticides or rodenticides.
- Escalate to a competent pest controller where the pest is not confidently identified, the infestation is established, access is unsafe or protected wildlife may be involved.
Practical tips
- Do not block intentional ventilation openings; fit an appropriate pest-resistant grille or mesh instead.
- Photograph droppings, damage or insects before cleaning them away if you may need help identifying the pest.
- Never disturb bats or a suspected bat roost. UK wildlife law protects bats and their roosting places.
