Understand why a small pilot hole can make screws easier to drive and when a countersink helps the head sit neatly.

- A pilot hole removes a small amount of material before the screw enters, helping guide the screw and reducing splitting risk near timber edges/end grain.
- Choose the pilot diameter for the screw and material rather than automatically matching the screw’s outside thread diameter. Manufacturer tables are preferable where available.
- Mark the drilling depth so you do not drill unnecessarily deep or through the finished face.
- Drill straight and clear chips from deeper holes so the bit does not bind or overheat.
- A countersink creates a shallow conical recess so a countersunk screw head can sit flush or slightly below the surface.
- Countersink only enough for the head; an oversized/deep countersink weakens the surface around the fixing.
- Where appearance matters, test the pilot/countersink on scrap material before drilling the finished component.

- Hardwoods generally benefit more from careful pilot sizing than softwoods.
