Replacing a Single Damaged Brick: What to Check First

  1. Decide whether the brick itself is the problem. Widespread spalling, stepped cracks, bulging or repeated damage can indicate moisture, frost exposure or structural movement that needs diagnosis first.
  2. Find a replacement brick that reasonably matches size, durability, absorption and appearance rather than choosing by colour alone.
  3. Rake/remove the surrounding mortar carefully so the damaged brick can be extracted without breaking adjacent brick arrises.
  4. Clean the opening back to sound masonry and dampen/precondition absorbent surfaces where appropriate for the chosen mortar.
  5. Use a mortar compatible with the existing wall, especially on older or softer masonry where a hard modern cement-rich mortar may be unsuitable.
  6. Bed the replacement brick fully, keep face alignment and joint widths consistent with the surrounding work and avoid leaving voids behind the face.
  7. Tool the joints to match the existing profile and protect the repair while the mortar cures.
  8. Monitor the area after repair; if cracking or spalling recurs, investigate the underlying cause.

Practical tips

  • A single damaged face can sometimes be a symptom of moisture or incompatible pointing rather than a defective brick alone.
  • Replacing bricks in arches, lintel zones, retaining walls or visibly moving masonry needs more care than an isolated non-structural patch.
  • On historic/listed buildings, matching brick and mortar can require specialist conservation advice.
