- Solar panels generate DC electricity when daylight reaches the cells; the amount produced varies with array size, orientation, pitch, shading and weather.
- An inverter converts the panels’ DC electricity into AC electricity that normal household circuits and appliances can use.
- A standard solar inverter manages the PV array, while a hybrid inverter can also manage a compatible battery within the same system architecture.
- A battery stores surplus energy for later use. Its headline capacity and usable capacity are not always identical, so compare usable kWh when assessing storage.
- Optimisers can provide module-level electronics on suitable systems, helping monitoring and system design where roof faces or shading conditions vary; they are not automatically necessary on every roof.
- Microinverters perform conversion at individual-panel level rather than using one central string inverter and can suit some complex roof layouts.
- Any electricity not used or stored may be exported to the grid, subject to the system, metering and export arrangements in place.
Practical tips
- Do not choose equipment solely from the highest headline kW or kWh number; compatibility, usable capacity, warranty and system design matter.
- Ask installers to explain what happens if one roof face is shaded and how the proposed inverter deals with multiple orientations.
- Backup or EPS functionality is separate from ordinary battery storage and needs a system specifically designed for it.
