Wall Plugs & Fixings Explained: Match the Fixing to the Wall
Understand why solid masonry, hollow block, plasterboard and cavity walls need different fixing approaches.

Key points & steps
- Identify the substrate before selecting the fixing. The visible plaster/paint layer does not tell you whether the structure behind is solid masonry, hollow block, plasterboard or timber stud.
- Use a fixing whose manufacturer explicitly lists the substrate and load/application you intend to use.
- Match the drill diameter to the fixing manufacturer’s specification and drill a clean hole to the stated depth.
- Remove drilling dust where the fixing instructions require it; dust can stop plugs seating correctly and can affect higher-performance fixings.
- Use the specified screw diameter and minimum embedment. A random screw that happens to fit the plug may not make the fixing work as designed.
- For plasterboard/cavity walls, check the cavity depth and board condition and use a fixing designed for hollow substrates, or fix into structural timber where appropriate.
- For heavy, safety-critical or overhead loads, use a properly specified fixing system rather than relying on a generic DIY plug or a quoted rating without understanding the substrate/test conditions.
Practical tips
- The fixing system is only as strong as the substrate it is anchored into.
- Packaging load figures are conditional on the exact substrate, installation and test method—do not treat them as universal safe working loads.
- Unknown walls and critical loads are good reasons to seek product technical advice or competent installation.
